Widely considered a master of the hammer dulcimer, the predecessor of the piano, McCutcheon has performed to sold-out audiences around the world, in venues ranging from Russia to Dallas. During the past twenty years, McCutcheon has performed with many of music’s greatest artists, including Pete Seeger, Johnny Cash, Arlo Guthrie, and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Raised in Wisconsin, John McCutcheon migrated to the Appalachians armed with a backpack, a banjo, and a healthy measure of youthful curiosity. In the process, he discovered a new home, both musically and geographically. Learning at the knees of some of the great traditional masters, McCutcheon mastered the banjo, guitar, fiddle, autoharp, mountain dulcimer, and jaw harp. But most consider his greatest talent to be his ability to see the meaning in the mundane, to lay out the horizons in one’s own backyard. Combining these talents, McCutcheon blends traditional music and original material with ease, grace, and power.

Garnering seven Grammy nominations and almost every imaginable award in the independent record industry, John McCutcheon has brought joy to millions of listeners. After spending years as a local resident, McCutcheon now lives in Atlanta. His farewell benefit concert for the Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice provides the opportunity to witness his blend of song and story, humor and pathos, contemporary and traditional, in an exhilarating celebration of Americana.
